Commas

Subject:                   We May Be Small, But We are Terrible

                               Our Usage

                When you speak, you pause by keeping silent for a second.  When you write, you signal a pause by using commas.

                You use us, commas, to set off words, phrases, or clauses in compound sentences.
When Do You Use Comma?

                Answer the following questions:

                What are your favourite colors? ________________________________________________
                What are your favourite movies? ________________________________________________
                                Rule # 1.  Use commas to separate words or phrases in a series.




                Combine the two sets of sentences.
                I used to bake chocolate cake.
                Now I prefer cooking Korean dishes.
                ________________________________________________________________________
                Joaquin came.
                I wasn’t home.
                _________________________________________________________________________
Rule # 2.  Use a comma before the conjunction in a compound sentence.  The comma is often omitted in a short compound sentence.





                Insert comma/s to smooth the flow of the main idea.
                Unfortunately the field trip was cancelled because of the rain.
                Yes we’ll try to schedule it for another weekend.
                Has everyone by the way signed to bring food?

Rule # 3. Use commas after introductory words and to set off words or expressions that interrupt the main thought of a sentence.





Note: Use one comma if the interrupting expression appears at the beginning or end of a sentence.  Use two commas if the expression appears in the middle of the sentence.

Note: Use one comma if the noun is the first or last word in the sentence.  Use two commas if the noun is in the middle of the sentence.
